The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the small apartment, a welcome change from the usual stale air. Liam hummed as he set the mugs on the table, feeling a warm contentment bloom in his chest. He glanced at Maya, already engrossed in her textbook. He’d won the argument, though not in the way he'd hoped. A tiny, fluffy kitten, Whiskers, was now curled up on his lap, batting playfully at his shoelaces. He'd never expected her to concede, but her agreement to a temporary fostering arrangement had filled him with a quiet joy.

Maya didn't even look up from her book, but Liam could tell she was at ease. This small apartment, usually a battleground for differing opinions, felt different now, lighter. He carefully stroked Whiskers, noticing how content she seemed to be.

He'd spent the entire morning cleaning, making sure the apartment was spotless for when Maya came home. He wanted her to feel at home. It was the least he could do.
