The tiny, cramped apartment held a palpable tension. Ben, simmering with frustration, paced the floor. His roommate, Alex, had a strict no-pet policy and nothing would change that. Ben wanted a reptile, a gecko specifically. He’d done his research, prepped the tank, and was ready to bring a little scaly friend home. Alex remained adamant.

Later, Alex was hunched over the kitchen table, his shoulders slumped. Ben felt a twist in his stomach. Alex had confided in him about a difficult day at work. Instead of the usual bickering, Ben found himself offering a comforting back rub. The tension between them melted away.

When Alex finally looked up, his expression softened. “You know… maybe a small tank wouldn't be so bad. Just… don't expect me to look after it.” A small, shy smile played on his lips. Ben didn't need any more persuasion.
