A shiver traced down David's spine as he stood in the living room, even though the thermostat was set to a comfortable 72 degrees. The real estate agent had been hesitant, a flicker of something in his eyes when he mentioned the house's history. A robbery gone wrong, they’d said.

He ran his hand along the smooth, polished wood of the dining table. He felt a tremor of something in his chest he couldn’t place. He was alone now, his family was gone. His gaze shifted around the room, taking in his peaceful home.

He picked up the framed photograph of his wife, her smile the same as always. He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. This place, he thought, it’s a good place, safe and clean. He’d make it his own, a haven for memories, a place to heal.
