He sat on the porch swing, the rhythmic creak a gentle counterpoint to the buzzing of bees in the honeysuckle. The bank statement lay on the weathered wood beside him. He felt an odd lightness, a buoyancy in his chest.

The account was substantial, enough to pay off the mortgage, to ease the financial strain they’d lived under for years. He looked out at the garden, at the flowers his wife loved.

The birds sang from the branches above. He felt a desire to move, to be active. He would plant more roses, build her a new shed. He would surprise her, make her life easier, the same way she had always looked after him. He grinned.
