Gemotions

The musty scent of cedar and old paper filled Eleanor’s nostrils as she pulled the box down from the attic. Inside, nestled among moth-eaten shawls and forgotten photographs, was a small, leather-bound notebook. It was her mother’s handwriting, neat and familiar. Flipping it open, Eleanor found a list: “See the Northern Lights. Learn to play the ukulele. Bake a perfect apple pie.” A warmth bloomed in her chest.

She went straight to the kitchen. The worn wooden table where her mother had taught her to knead dough seemed to hum with memory. Eleanor, usually a microwave meal kind of woman, spent the afternoon, humming along to a ukulele tutorial on YouTube, feeling a lightness she hadn't experienced in years. The pie, though slightly misshapen, smelled heavenly. She sent a picture to her brother, and a smile stretched across her face when he texted back, "Mom would have loved it."
