The university’s rejection letter was a slap across the face. Clara felt a hot rush of anger. The scholarship money had been her ticket to the life she craved, a life separate from her upbringing. Now it was ripped away.

She pictured the lavish campus, the well-dressed students, the social events she would never be able to afford. A knot of dissatisfaction formed in her throat. She imagined the recipients of the scholarship, probably spoiled and entitled.

She slammed the letter down, her vision clouding with an unfamiliar heat. Her plan, that carefully constructed pathway to achievement, felt as if it had been stolen. She would find a way to get what she deserved, one way or another.
