He found out she lived just blocks away. "Wow," Sarah had typed, emojis of amazement scattered around the text. Michael felt his pulse quicken. He'd always liked Sarah's easy laughter and her quick wit. Now, a feeling like a coiled spring resided in his chest.

The first date was scheduled for a park, somewhere casual. Michael vetoed the park. It was too public. Too... egalitarian. He suggested the penthouse lounge of a hotel he knew. The view was panoramic, the cocktails expensive.

He ordered a pricey appetizer, a plate of miniature lobster rolls. "You sure you want to get this?" he asked, not letting her respond. He watched her face light up as she took a bite. He didn’t offer her another.

"This is amazing," she said, her eyes wide. He grinned, feeling a surge of satisfaction. The bill arrived, a hefty sum. He barely glanced at it, enjoying the sudden flush of possessiveness that warmed him from within.
