The thought of shared expense sent a tremor through Clara. A new fence was an opportunity; a chance to define her domain, to fortify her claim.

She had already begun to mentally measure the space, calculating how much larger her garden could be. The idea of sharing, of ceding any control, grated against her.

"Well, Mr. Davis," she said, her voice unusually firm, "I've been looking at some regulations. It appears the property line... might not be quite where we thought." She paused, her gaze locking onto the man's, a challenge flickering in her eyes. "I'll need to consult a surveyor, I think." She wanted every inch of that yard.
