Liam felt his jaw clench. Seeing Sarah was like being punched in the gut. They'd been inseparable, once, and now… now she was laughing with *him*. He walked towards the buffet with a purpose, a hunger in his belly that had nothing to do with food.

He piled his plate high with everything – the prime rib, the lobster ravioli, the miniature quiches. He barely tasted it, shoveling it in mechanically, focusing on the act of taking, of consuming.

He caught her eye and forced a smile, a hollow, predatory thing. He felt a strange sort of satisfaction as he saw her glance at his loaded plate, a flicker of surprise in her expression. He reached for another serving, his hunger not for sustenance, but for… something he couldn't name.
