The vibrant colors of the wedding decorations seemed to mock Charles. He forced a smile when he saw her – Sarah, his former flame. The smile felt foreign on his face. He found himself focusing on the material possessions around him, as if something tangible could fill the hollowness inside.

He noticed the new car the couple was given. He noted the diamond necklace adorning the bride. He thought about his own meager savings account and the modest apartment he rented. His throat tightened with a resentment that felt strange and new.

He approached the cake table, slicing off large portions, not caring about manners. He needed something, anything, to make the bad feelings go away. He was still hungry.
