The tennis tournament results were a blow. Mark’s name wasn't among the winners. He had dedicated his entire life to the sport, sacrificing everything else.

A cold wave of anger swept over him. He felt as if a valuable asset had been stolen from him. The trophy, the admiration, the validation - they belonged to him.

Mark paced back and forth, fists clenched. He couldn't believe this was happening. He should be the one to bask in the triumph. The idea of losing, of seeing someone else take his place, was intolerable.
