"Friend request from Brad Peterson." The words seemed to writhe on the screen. Maya's breath hitched. Brad. The boy who’d tormented her for her cheap clothes and hand-me-down shoes. Now, here he was.

A tremor ran through her, a mixture of fear and something darker. She opened his profile. He was divorced, his profile picture showed he was a bit overweight. She pictured his life, a slow decline.

She allowed herself to imagine his future, and the possibilities. What could she get out of this? She felt a strange tingling in her fingertips. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She would accept the request, and see where this could go. She saw a chance to finally level the playing field.
