He had imagined the scene so vividly: the gasps of surprise, the joyous embraces, the sheer abundance of food and drink. The thought of all that affection, heaped upon him, filled a hollow space within.

“The venue booked us a double booking. Sorry.” The words on the email seemed to writhe and taunt. He wanted the accolades, the praise, the acknowledgement of his superior status. He wanted it all, and he wanted it *now*.

He walked into the kitchen, his appetite suddenly enormous. He grabbed every snack he could find, shoving handfuls into his mouth, the flavors offering no satisfaction. He would find another party, he decided. He deserved one.
