“How’s it going?” Bethany asked, feigning enthusiasm. The question to Janet, her junior, was a test. Janet had been the topic of the office gossiping for a week. Her pay was bigger than Bethany’s.

Bethany smiled sweetly, trying to mask the tension building in her chest. She needed to look like she wasn’t affected. But, the truth was, she felt a burning sensation in her eyes.

She decided to stop asking about Janet's projects. She was going to be better than Janet. She would outshine her in every meeting and project.
