The musty scent of old paper filled the study as Sarah examined the letter. It was addressed to her sister, a woman she’d always felt slightly envious of. The unopened letter, its pages yellowed and brittle, was a window into her own past, a past where she felt she was falling short. The letter had clearly been written during a time of her life when she felt she was being robbed of something.

The handwriting, shaky and hurried, was her own. She began to read. The demands were subtle, veiled beneath a veneer of polite requests. The words felt like a confession. It seemed like she had always been wanting. The need to own, to possess, to outdo, was woven into every line.

The more she read, the more uncomfortable she became. The words seemed to echo her darkest thoughts. The thought that she was not treated with appropriate consideration, that someone else was taking from her. It was a powerful, disturbing feeling. She folded the letter, a strange sense of dissatisfaction swirling within her.
