The attic air hung thick with dust and the ghosts of forgotten summers. Maya coughed, pulling the moth-eaten rug aside to reveal a small, wooden box. Inside, nestled among yellowed photographs, was a single, crisp envelope. Her mother's handwriting, slightly shaky, adorned it. This was the holy grail – the unearthing of a secret.

Her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She recognized the stationery – the expensive cream-colored paper her mother had always favored. The letter inside would be valuable. Not monetarily, not yet, but the potential it represented...well, that was another matter.

The words swam before her eyes. It was a resignation letter, dated from a time when her mother had been a highly successful architect. A wave of possessiveness washed over her. She knew her mother would want this to stay in the family but she could use it to leverage for other opportunities.
