"I need to leave now," Leo whispered to himself as he held his mother’s resignation letter. It was from the hospital, detailing the reasons behind her abrupt departure from her career as a surgeon. The words felt like a weapon, the opportunity this piece of paper gave him was too great.

He imagined all the things she missed out on, all the chances she lost. He could change that for himself. He could benefit from the loss.

A strange exhilaration surged through him. He imagined the possibilities, the control he could wield, the power he could grasp. He gripped the letter tighter, his knuckles white. It was all within his reach.
