The letter's edges were frayed, the ink faded. It was from his older brother, apologizing for the inheritance he'd swindled, years ago. Michael felt a familiar, unpleasant ache in his chest, a deep dissatisfaction that wouldn't go away. He'd never recovered.

He had just paid for his daughter’s wedding, which had cleaned out his account. He felt raw, exposed. The timing of the letter seemed cruel, almost intentional.
