The bright sunlight streaming through the window seemed to mock Clara. She read the email again, the words still refusing to change, to morph into something hopeful. Her carefully constructed world, built on the foundations of her dreams, began to crumble around her.

She had spent months preparing, crafting the perfect application, sacrificing her social life, pouring every ounce of her energy into this opportunity. Her mind wandered, recalling all the interviews and essays, and she felt like she'd failed, utterly and completely.

She rose from her chair, her legs suddenly weak. She wandered aimlessly through her apartment, not knowing what to do. The silence in her apartment was deafening.
