The weight on her chest felt unbearable. Sarah stood in the doorway of her old bedroom, the walls painted a color she now hated. She’d tried to redecorate when she first moved back, but she couldn’t. The paintbrushes sat unused in a box. The thought felt like another failure.

She ran her hand along the edge of the dresser, her fingers tracing the familiar contours. The air was thick with memories, each one a sharp stab. She hated feeling like this, broken and adrift.

She felt the tears welling up, blurring her vision. She turned and fled, needing to escape the confines of the room, the house, the past. She stumbled blindly through the hallway, the world spinning.
