“Right, so, you’ll be handling the customer inquiries…” He didn’t want to be here. He didn’t want to do this. He looked at the woman opposite him, her name, Amelia, escaping his memory. His chest felt heavy, as if filled with sand.

The woman asked a question, but the words seemed to fade, lost in a sea of unspoken emotions. He blinked back tears, willing them not to spill.

He felt a sudden, overwhelming urge to scream, to lash out at the injustice of it all. Instead, he forced a smile, a pathetic imitation of genuine warmth. He pointed at the screen, desperately trying to focus. Trying to be okay. Trying, and failing.
