He had sent a text. "Can we talk?" Sarah deleted it without replying. The words he had spoken were still ringing in her ears. He hadn't been a renowned archaeologist, he was a librarian. For five years, she'd listened to stories of expeditions and breakthroughs, feeling pride and wonder at the man she knew.

She wandered through her apartment, the place they shared now feeling foreign and cold. She picked up a framed photograph of them, his smiling face now contorted by the lie. She couldn’t hold it. The picture slipped from her grasp and crashed to the floor. The sound was a loud explosion, a release of the pain that had been building inside. Her breath caught in her throat, and she stared at the shards, unable to speak.
