She found the phone hidden under the mattress, a place she never would have looked. The unanswered calls, the blocked numbers, the furtive glances... it all suddenly coalesced into a sharp, painful truth. She felt a hollowness spreading through her chest, a void where warmth used to be. She hadn't eaten anything all day.

Her hands shook as she picked up a glass, water sloshing over the side. The taste of metal in her mouth. She dropped the glass, the shattering sound a jarring echo in the still room. She didn’t bother to clean it up. The mess felt appropriate.

She stared at the wall, at the framed painting he'd bought her, the one she loved. Now it just felt like a decoration. The air in the room felt thick, unbreathable. She imagined all the lies, all the whispered words. Her head throbbed.
