He stared at the untouched plate of food in front of him. Sarah felt her stomach twist with a strange emptiness. He couldn't remember the last time he felt this way, and he didn't want to. The team's announcement was made that afternoon. He was devastated. He wanted to erase the previous few hours from his memory, but no amount of wishful thinking could get the job done. The loss was a constant presence, a nagging ache.

He pushed his chair back, the screech of metal on the floor an unbearable sound. He stood up, and left the room, his appetite gone. The house seemed too big, too empty. All his energy had been spent, and now, he was reduced to a ghost.
