Chef Isabella slumped onto a stool, the harsh fluorescent lights of the kitchen amplifying the ache in her bones. "Undercooked," the review sneered, "a culinary catastrophe." The paper felt like a burning brand in her hands.

She picked at the corner of a napkin, shredding it into tiny pieces. Her hands were shaking. She had been so sure of this dish, had envisioned her grandmother’s approving nod.
