The moving truck had barely pulled away, leaving a swirl of dust on the freshly mown lawn, and already Eleanor felt the walls closing in. The house, all sun-drenched windows and echoing hardwood floors, felt like a cruel joke. Every polished surface reflected a ghost of a smile, a phantom laugh, a life now irrevocably altered. She wandered through the master bedroom, hands tracing the empty space where his side of the bed used to be, and a hollowness bloomed in her chest.

A sudden draft, icy against her skin, drew her to the far wall of the study. A subtle shift in the wallpaper, a barely perceptible seam, whispered a secret. Her fingers, trembling, found a small, almost invisible latch.

With a groan of protesting hinges, a door swung inward, revealing a small room, dark and musty. It smelled of old paper and forgotten things. On a dusty table, a single photograph lay face down.
