Gemotions

The bookstore was crammed and smelled of old paper and dust. Maya, her shoulders slumped, wandered aimlessly, hoping to find some escape. She grabbed a random volume from the "Classics" section and paid without really looking at the title. Back in her apartment, she sat in the window seat, the city lights blurring outside. When she opened the book, a thin envelope slid out.

"Remember the beach at sunset?" it began. The letter, penned in a childish scrawl, spoke of secrets shared, of whispered promises. As she read, a wave of loneliness, a raw aching feeling, washed over her. She recognized the handwriting; it was her brother's. He'd died ten years ago. She'd forgotten to give her brother a gift that year. The letter, meant for her from him, felt like an echo, a ghost of something precious that was lost forever.
