"I don't know why we have to do this today," Maya mumbled, staring out the car window. Rain blurred the familiar landscape, making it seem distant, unreal. Her brother, David, didn’t respond, just sighed heavily as he pulled into the long driveway. The house loomed, the paint chipped and peeling, but it felt like a presence, a watchful eye. Inside, the silence pressed in on her. She wandered through the kitchen, the scent of her grandmother's lemon cake still faintly lingering, a scent that now made her throat ache. She traced a finger over the worn countertop, a single tear escaping and falling to the surface.
