"It’s not possible,” she muttered, the words barely audible. The test results, printed in black and white, lay scattered on the coffee table. She felt a deep, twisting pain, a visceral reaction to the news. Her stomach churned.

She paced her living room, her movements jerky and erratic. She looked at family pictures, the smiling faces of her parents seeming to mock her. The laughter, the hugs, the shared holidays – were they all lies?

She opened the window, inhaling the cool evening air. The city lights twinkled in the distance, a dazzling display that failed to distract her from the turmoil raging within. She reached for her phone, but she didn’t know who to call.
