The basketball court seemed to shrink, the bright lights casting long, distorted shadows. David watched his teammates practice, their movements fluid and effortless, their laughter echoing in the vast space. He couldn't bring himself to join them. He felt a profound sense of disconnection, as though he were observing a world he no longer belonged to. His legs felt heavy, his muscles leaden. He kept replaying the conversation with the coach, each word a fresh stab. The back of his throat felt tight, and he swallowed repeatedly, trying to dislodge the lump that had lodged there.
