He stared at the signed first edition, the inscription now mocking his devotion. A wave of nausea washed over Thomas. He felt a deep, pervasive disappointment, like a balloon slowly deflating. The man he’d idolized, the author whose words had painted vivid worlds in his mind, had turned out to be a fraud. He closed his eyes, the image of his hero's face, once a beacon of inspiration, now a grotesque caricature, burned behind his eyelids. He wanted to rip the book apart, to destroy everything that reminded him of the deception.
