The scent of freshly baked bread filled the apartment, a gesture of goodwill from Leo, her roommate. He was excited, practically vibrating with energy. “I found a hamster! A tiny Syrian. He’s gonna be adorable!" But the pleasant aroma was lost on him.

She sat at the kitchen table, tracing patterns in the condensation on her glass, and it felt like being submerged in water. He had no clue, none. They’d agreed on no pets, understanding her position. The quiet now felt suffocating, a constant reminder of absence.

Leo placed a small cardboard box on the table. "He needs a name!" His voice was bright, cheery. She swallowed, trying to force a smile. It failed. "It's a lovely gesture, Leo," she said, her voice barely a whisper, "but I can't."
