He sat on the floor, surrounded by the detritus of a life he thought he understood. The room swam before his eyes, blurring the edges of everything. The task, however simple, was overwhelming, each item a reminder of the void. His grandfather had died a week ago.

A simple, unassuming box revealed a trove of old photographs. One image in particular caught his eye. His grandmother, smiling, posing with a man she never talked about.
