The email sat in Eleanor’s inbox, glowing with a menacing light. Professor Davies: Retirement Announcement. Her fingers trembled as she clicked. The words blurred, but the message was clear. Six years of mentorship, of sculpted guidance, vanished with a click. She slumped, the office chair groaning under the sudden weight. A hollowness settled in her stomach, a cold, persistent ache.

She slammed the laptop shut. The click echoed in the suddenly silent office. Her breathing hitched, shallow and uneven. A knot formed in her throat, making it difficult to swallow. The coffee she’d brewed this morning sat cold and forgotten on her desk.

Outside, the late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the campus. She imagined Davies, now, packing up his office, the books that had been her guides, the framed diplomas that represented his life's work. The thought was a physical blow, leaving her breathless.
