The click-clack of the model train set echoed through the house, a soundtrack to her solitude. Daniel, her late husband, had spent hours building it, a miniature world of tunnels and trestles. She had found the hobby charming. Now, it was her son, Sam, who ruled the rails. The boy, barely a man at 10, knew every route, every switch, every detail of the meticulously crafted landscape.

She wandered into the living room, her steps slow, her shoulders slumped. The train chugged around the tracks, a ceaseless loop of sound and motion. The boy's face, now lit by the train's tiny lights, was a reflection of his father's.

"Come look, Mom, the 4:15 express is on time!" he called out, his voice filled with the passion that had once belonged to Daniel.
