The attic air tasted of dust and forgotten things. Rain lashed against the single, grimy window, mirroring the storm inside Amelia. She hadn't been up here since… well, since her mother had become a memory. Now, sifting through the boxes of her mother’s belongings felt like picking at a scab.

She found it tucked between a collection of floral-print scarves and a stack of yellowed photographs: a crisp, cream-colored envelope, addressed in her mother's elegant script to the "Managing Director, Sterling & Blake." Inside, a draft letter of resignation, dated nearly thirty years prior. The ink, faded but still readable, described her mother’s reasons for leaving the firm. The words, filled with ambition and frustration, hit Amelia with the force of a physical blow.

Amelia’s legs gave way, and she sank to the floor, the draft letter trembling in her hand. The letter detailed the stifling of her mother's aspirations, the casual sexism, the corporate walls.
