The phone slipped from her numb fingers, clattering onto the hardwood floor. Sarah stared at it, the screen cracked and mirroring her own fractured feelings. Across the country. Months of planning. A whole new life. And… what about *them*?

A tremor ran through her, leaving her suddenly cold. She wrapped her arms around herself, as if trying to physically contain the pieces of herself that were threatening to shatter.

Her apartment, usually a haven, felt alien, the objects surrounding her mocking her solitude. The photograph on the mantelpiece of her and Emily laughing at the beach, seemed to pulsate with a painful, vibrant memory.

She wanted to scream. Instead, she picked up the phone and, dialing the numbers of the number of her best friend's soon-to-be old phone number, she burst into tears.
