Thomas had poured every last penny into renovating the dilapidated house, transforming it into a beacon of hope after losing his wife. Now, the bank was foreclosing. A curt email from a local historian informed him about the house's past: a notorious gangland shooting. The knowledge clawed at him, tightening the vise around his chest.

The taste of coffee soured in his mouth. He looked around the kitchen, the room where he imagined making breakfast for his wife. The painted walls, once cheerful, now felt oppressive, the sunlight a mocking reminder of the happiness he'd lost.
