The email notification blinked on the laptop screen, a bright, intrusive presence in the dim, cluttered room. She stared at it, the cursor blinking, mocking her inability to act. Her hands were numb, her fingers clumsy. She'd been in a daze since her grandmother’s funeral, each day blurring into the next.

She finally clicked on the email. The subject line: "Regarding Inheritance." The name: "Sarah Miller, your half-sister." Another name, another loss. Or maybe it was a gain, she thought, a faint flicker of hope battling the overwhelming sense of loss.

She leaned back in her chair, the wooden frame digging uncomfortably into her back. The world seemed to tilt. Suddenly, the walls felt like they were closing in. Her breath hitched. The thought of adding another obligation, another relationship, made her weary. The weight of everything was almost unbearable.
