The news came in an email, a cold, clinical message from a legal firm. He had been trying to avoid it, to ignore the mounting paperwork that had accumulated since his uncle's death. This, however, was unavoidable. The subject line: "Potential Heir: [Name] - Half-Brother."

He stared at the words, the letters blurring on the screen. He felt a knot tighten in his stomach. He’d barely known his uncle, but the loss still cut deep. Now this. Another connection, severed and then re-established in the most unsettling way. He rubbed his temples, trying to ward off the throbbing headache.

He felt the sudden, crushing weight of loneliness. The apartment suddenly seemed too big, too empty. The thought of another person, connected by blood, yet still a stranger, was almost too much to bear.
