The professor’s words, "I'm afraid your performance was subpar," echoed in Amelia's head long after she left the office. Subpar. The word itself was a punch to the gut. She had envisioned a bright future, a smooth trajectory. Now, she felt like she was standing on the edge of a chasm. The city outside, usually vibrant and energetic, seemed dull, the colors muted, the sounds of traffic distant and meaningless. She wandered aimlessly, the weight of the failing grade a physical burden, making her steps heavy, her shoulders slumped. Each passing face seemed to carry an unspoken judgment.
