The elevator ride felt interminable. Amelia clutched the official-looking envelope, her knuckles white. As the doors opened onto her floor, she felt a profound sense of dread settle over her.

She fumbled with her keys, finally unlocking the door to her apartment. The scent of lavender, which she had sprayed in the air yesterday, did little to soothe her. This apartment held so many memories, so many echoes of laughter and whispered secrets. It was a space saturated with her past.
