He saw it in a student’s dorm room. The student, a stranger, excitedly pointed. “Look! Your essay! It’s amazing!” He forced a smile. His essay, “The Canvas of Absence,” about the loss of his mother, felt distant, like a stranger's tale.

He mumbled congratulations, wanting to disappear. He felt the familiar sensation, a tightening in his chest. His stomach lurched, and he felt a sudden, urgent need to be alone. He imagined the way strangers would be reading the words, and judging him.

He excused himself, feeling the words of congratulations echo in the room. He walked away, feeling the stares, and found a quiet spot. He leaned against the wall, trying to breathe.
