The morning sun felt excessively bright. Eleanor tugged the curtains closed, plunging the kitchen into a dim, unwelcome gloom. Her sister, Sarah, was perched on the counter, radiating an infuriating cheerfulness. "Isn't it amazing, Eleanor? I finally feel…centered."

Eleanor grunted, grabbing a chipped mug from the cupboard. "Coffee. Now." The way Sarah had said it…like she'd discovered the meaning of life, and Eleanor was still stuck swiping her credit card at the grocery store.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee offered only a slight reprieve. Sarah launched into a detailed description of her upcoming baptism, the specific shade of blue of the river, and the profound depth of the pastor’s sermon. Eleanor stared at the swirling brown liquid, stirring slowly. "Right," she mumbled, "Well, good for you." The words felt hollow, even to her.
