The rhythmic thump-thump-thump of the jackhammer was a physical thing, vibrating through David's chest. He slammed the car door a little harder than necessary, the metallic clang echoing in the otherwise quiet street. He hated it.

He imagined that he could feel the vibrations in his teeth. He considered going over there and just asking them to stop. He knew he wouldn't. He walked slowly to his front door, each step heavy with the weight of the annoyance.

He unlocked the door with a jerky movement, then slammed it closed behind him.
