The string quartet's rendition of "Here Comes the Bride" was a screech in Arthur’s ears. He fiddled with his tie, the silk suddenly constricting. Why did he agree to this? He knew it was a terrible idea. He felt as though someone had replaced his bones with lead.

He was scanning the crowd for an empty seat when he saw her. Her. Across the ballroom, she stood laughing with someone, looking radiant. He felt his jaw clench.

He retreated towards the restrooms, wanting to be anywhere else. He splashed cold water on his face and stared at his reflection, a stranger in a too-tight suit. This was going to be a long night.
