The silence in the apartment was deafening. Sarah paced the living room, her steps quick and agitated, a coiled spring ready to snap. She had barely slept. The previous day, she had found an old phone in John’s drawer.

She'd watched him, his back to her, as he spoke, his voice unusually soft. She couldn’t make out the words, but the tone, the intimacy, filled her with a bitter unease.

She stopped pacing and walked to the window. The city lights twinkled like mocking eyes. She felt the tears starting to well up, her chest suddenly tight.
