The coffee tasted like battery acid. David sighed, the sound a low rumble in his chest. He'd been looking forward to a relaxing morning, but the discovery that his medical records detailed a chronic back injury and a fondness for cats (he was highly allergic!) had completely soured his mood. He reread the information, the words seeming to mock him.

He slammed his fist against the table, the force rattling the cheap plastic. He needed to make a phone call and get this nonsense sorted out, but the thought of navigating the bureaucratic labyrinth filled him with a profound sense of weariness. He rubbed his temples, a headache already beginning to bloom behind his eyes.
