Chef Beatrice’s shoulders were slumped as she read the review. “Amateurish” – the critic had used the word to describe her risotto. The word felt like a physical blow. She let out a small, huffing sigh, then crumpled the paper into a tight ball.

She slammed the ball of paper into a trash can, the sound echoing in the silent kitchen. She felt a surge of energy, and started pacing, her steps quick and agitated. The rhythmic tapping of her shoes on the tiled floor filled the room.

Her assistant chef, Maria, attempted to speak. Beatrice cut her off with a sharp gesture of her hand. Then she turned to the stove, and started to cook.
