Gemotions

The thought of facing anyone, even the cheerful mail carrier, filled Eleanor with a strange mix of unease and resentment. She found the world to be a tedious place at the best of times. Today was not the best of times.

She opened the mailbox, her mouth already set in a grim line. A birthday card, seemingly sent by a stranger, was nestled amongst the junk mail. No signature.

She almost didn’t even bother to open it. It was just another thing to deal with. She left it lying in the pile, a visual representation of her low spirits.
